When using tiles for outdoors laying, while confirming the resistance to freezing of Ceramica Sant'Agostino tiles (Standard

UNI EN 202), some fundamental laying requirements must be met in order to ensure that the flooring will resist freezing.

The most important conditions to satisfy are :

1) SLOPE : the flooring must be laid so that there is a minimum slope of 2% (2 cm lower for each meter in length).

2) EXPANSION JOINTS : it is advisable to use expansion joints every three linear meters along the support layer. To

compensate for expansion and contraction due to seasonal changes in temperature. These joints are to be filled with

foam insulating material.

3) GROUTING : employ water-proof materials suitable for use outdoors.

4) WATER-PROOFING LAYER : this material, too, must be applied at a 2% slope.

5) DRAINAGE : above the water-proofing layer and adequate surface drainage layer must be prepared to allow for any

water infiltrations to run off without building up pressure.

The best way to lay tiles outdoors is summarized in the two diagrams below. These refer to installation with a thermal

insulation layer (floors on the upper floors directly over another apartment) and insulation-free insallation (es. overhanging

balconies which do not require insulation).
